Connecting and forming friships with a fresh spirit, Rna Schoen Thomas '20 contributes to the uplifting atmosphere of Home Away from Home – a respite center program for senior citizens facilitated by Livingston CARES, the county service organization.
Every Tuesday or Thursday, Terry Price '58 finds himself on Geneseo's campus, engaging in several hours of meaningful interactions with student volunteers. Together they share culinary delights, craft projects, artistic creations, and the companionship that fosters bonds.
Terry Price and his wife Dianne are part of Home Away from Home Respite Center, a program designed for community seniors with memory-related illnesses, offering much-needed reprieve to their caregivers. The initiative was launched in 2016 by alumni Jessie Gyr '16 and Alyssa Penn ’15 through AmeriCorps Vista.
Student volunteers are trned on the nuances of memory-related diseases, effective communication techniques, and strategies for managing challenging situations they might encounter. Their primary goal is to create a welcoming space filled with enjoyable activities rooted in routines beneficial for those with such conditions, while providing enough variety to keep things engaging.
Home Away from Home matches what I wish to achieve on this earth, Rna Schoen Thomas '20 states. As a biology major contemplating her future as a physical therapist focused on senior care, she values the opportunity to work one-on-one with individuals and foster stronger relationships. Her experiences in Home Away from Home have made her desire more tangible, providing invaluable insights.
Rna has also expressed how this program influences her career aspirations: I'm thinking of pursuing a career in physical therapy with seniors as I enjoy working closely with them.
